Vertigo

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, or more commonly known as vertigo is a spinning sensation. Vertigo is often associated with disturbances in the nervous system, and organs that regulate balance. Rather than being a medical condition itself, vertigo is considered a symptom associated with different medical conditions.

While vertigo is often associated with feelings of dizziness, it refers to a more specific neurological sensation. Vertigo is usually defined as a feeling of dizziness in which one senses their environment is spinning, while there is no motion. Not all feelings of dizziness or lightheadedness entail the same sense of motion. Furthermore, vertigo is often associated with inner ear conditions. The buildup of calcium in the ear canal, known as canaliths, can interfere with neurological signals between the ear and the brain. This can cause the false sense of movement known as vertigo. A similar, more serious condition known as Meniere’s disease can also cause vertigo. This condition is classified as a buildup of fluid in the ear canal which causes problems with hearing and balance. One of the balance problems associated with Meniere’s disease is vertigo. Another common cause of vertigo is Labyrinthitis, an inflammation in the inner ear caused by an infection. Like many ear conditions, Labyrinthitis causes interference with the nervous system, hence feelings of vertigo, dizziness, or imbalance.

When one is experiencing chronic vertigo, it is important to strengthen and restore balance, to prevent related injuries.
