Incontinence

Due to a number of contributing factors, the condition of incontinence is very common among people. This is the unintentional leakage of urine or feces due to lost or reduced muscle control. This type of unintentional urination/defecation can be very inconvenient and embarrassing for the patient. To ease the symptoms, patients will commonly wear special articles of clothing to reduce discomfort. While these may make the patient feel a little better, they do not attempt to address the causes of the condition. For a multitude of reasons, physical therapy can help treat, or nearly cure incontinence.

The most direct cause of incontinence involves weak muscles in the lower pelvic area. These muscles are responsible for controlling urination and defecation allowing the body to release it when intended. If the muscles become weak, it may become difficult for the patient to hold in urine. With weak muscles, actions such as laughing, coughing, or sneezing can often cause the patient to leak. Incontinence is also commonly associated with aging, as body functions begin to break down as the person becomes older. By working to strengthen these muscles through physical therapy, control over pelvic floor muscles can be restored. Restoring strength in these muscles applies to both men and women. Additionally, a physical therapist can give the patient tips on how to minimize the symptoms and severity of incontinence. This may include dietary tips, general changes in behavior to reduce accidents, and a special plan based on the individual’s needs.
