26 Jan Physical Therapy for Total Knee Replacement
Total Knee Replacement
A Total Knee Replacement (also known as a TKR) is when the ends of the knee joint bones are removed in favor of metal caps. TKR is required if a bone disease or fracture damaged in a patient’s knee joint. If a patient suffers from knee pain that is preventing them from performing tasks common with their daily routine, they may require TKR. Before deciding on surgery, it is recommended to make a consultation with a physical therapist.
Prior to TKR, going to physical therapy has been shown to be quite beneficial. A physical therapist will prepare and educate the patient on some of the challenges that patients tend to face after TKR. Using a chair to reach something from a low cabinet instead of squatting or removing a loose rug are some examples of how to overcome the obstacles the patient may encounter. If the patient smokes, they should know that quitting can assist in the healing process.
After surgery, it is normal to spend two to three days recovering in a hospital. During that time, a physical therapist will work with the patient and teach them how to walk using crutches or a walker as well as on how to safely get in and out of a bed or chair. After this time, a physical therapist will give the patient exercises to improve your strength and range of motion. The patient will also be eased into doing activities.
