Pelvic Floor Dysfunction
The pelvic floor consists of a group of muscles that supports the organs in your pelvis. A key function of these muscles is their ability to relax and contract, thus giving you control of your urination and bowel movements. Therefore, pelvic floor dysfunction is when you are unable to control these muscles/bowel movements. Patients with this condition can only contract the pelvic floor muscles instead of contract and relax. Despite disrupting a very important bodily function, it is treatable thanks to physical therapy offered in Canandaigua.
Those with pelvic floor dysfunction may experience painful urination, constipation or the constant need to urinate. In addition to this, other symptoms include painful intercourse for women or ongoing pain in your pelvis. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it is recommended to make an appointment with your physician. At your appointment, you should expect to answer questions about your symptoms, history of urinary tract infections, and if you have given birth. After your physician confirms that you have pelvic floor dysfunction, you can begin physical therapy treatment.
Although surgery is one way to treat pelvic floor dysfunction, non-surgical methods have also been quite effective. An example of this is biofeedback. Performed by a physical therapist, biofeedback uses video and special monitors to monitor the patient’s pelvic floor as it relaxes or contracts. Described as nonpainful, biofeedback has helped over 75% of patients with pelvic floor dysfunction. In addition to this technique, the Canandaigua physical therapist may recommend relaxation techniques such as yoga or specific exercises.
