Back Pain and Urinary Incontinence

Physical Therapy in Canandaigua

Is there a connection between Urinary Incontinence and Back Pain? Researchers believe that the same activation of muscles in your abdomen that triggers back pain are the same muscles that may impact your ability to properly hold or release urine. If you are experiencing urinary incontinence and back pain and think that they may be related problems, stop by Lake Country Physical Therapy in Canandaigua where our top priority is to cater to each individual and help relieve their pain to the best of our ability.

Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS)

The CCHS surveyed 125,645 adults in 2011-2012, providing a representative sample of the Canadian population. The aim of this study was to estimate the associations between UI and back problems in Canadian men and women. The results concluded that having Urinary Incontinence increased the risk of also having back problems in both men and women compared with those not experiencing UI.

How Can Back Pain and Urinary Incontinence Be Prevented?

    • Exercise: Regular exercise can help prevent weak back muscles, which reduces your risk for back pain. Similarly, exercise can increase your pelvic floor muscles which help make holding urine easier.
    • Maintain a healthy weight: Excess weight can cause both UI and back pain.
    • Diet: Eating a balanced diet can help you maintain your weight and fuel exercise. Likewise, a healthy diet reduces the risk for constipation which can cause both back pain and incontinence.
