Swimming Safety in Canandaigua
Summer is finally here, and that means that as the weather heats up, people are going to swim in an attempt to cool off. When swimming in the beautiful Canandaigua Lake, be sure to do so in a safe manner.
Before swimming in a natural body of water, it is important to note how rough the waters are and what the temperature of the air and water is, as well as to observe any abrupt changes of those three factors. Being aware of your surroundings such as water depth or other swimmers, is also critical to avoiding potential injuries: An inadvertent collision could lead to a dangerous situation. Not only is it important to pay attention to the environment, but it’s also vital to be sure that one is in proper shape to swim and handle Canandaigua. Children should be given proper flotation devices to assist in their swimming as well as extra supervision. To further ensure one’s safety, one should only swim when there is a lifeguard on duty, considering 50-75% of drowning deaths happen to occur in open bodies of water, such as Lake Canandaigua. Be sure to stretch as well! Stretching is an important component to prevent cramping as it allows for your muscles to get ready for activity, like swimming. Swimming is a full body exercise, so it’s important to stretch and to know one’s limits when swimming, because exceeding those limits can ultimately result in death.
While having fun this summer, please remember to practice safe swimming by observing your surroundings, stretching, knowing your limits, and making sure a lifeguard is on duty. In doing so, you can enable yourself to have as much fun as possible while simultaneously keeping your risk of drowning as low as possible.
