22 Mar Physical Therapy for Golfers
FORE!!!!
Spring is here and so is golf season, meaning the injuries from golf are on their way as well. The most common injuries for golfers include back pain, golfer’s elbow, shoulder pain, knee pain, and more. Golf injuries can be so bad that they may even require surgery. Luckily most of the pain golfers may be experiencing from various injuries can be treated with physical therapy.
It is advised that you follow proper lifting mechanics and bend at the knees to avoid back pain or injury when lifting your golf bag or retrieving your golf ball. A longer shaft is recommended if your putter is too short so your back is not being compromised when playing. Slowing down your backswing is also advised in order to minimize stress on the lower back and alleviate back pain during golfing, and many golfers will tell you it’s not about how hard you swing, but making good contact so that will make the ball go further.
The pain from golfer’s elbow, or tennis elbow, can be minimized by easing up on the grip pressure, loosening the elbows during the swing, and slowly bringing the club back during the backswing. You will also find by not gripping the club so tightly can also add some distance to your shots.
It is advised to switch to spike-less shoes in order to minimize knee pain as it reduces stress on the knees while twisting. If you are recovering from knee surgery, practice and play with short irons to ensure the knees are not being overwhelmed. It is always advised to make sure you aren’t pushing your body to a point that is unhealthy and to know your limits!
