Hiking Safety
Hiking can be a very fun and rewarding activity during any season of the year, but with all that fun, comes risks and you must be prepared for anything that may come up.
One of the most important things to do before going on a hike is to plan ahead. Do not just pick a random trail to go out on and hike. In order to stay safe during your hike, you should be familiar with the area or have at least researched the area you will be in and know where you are headed. When planning your hike, make sure to keep in mind all of the factors involved like the amount of time you have to hike and the available routes, this way you can plan ahead and not have to worry about the logistics during your trek. Being aware of the weather forecast for the day of your trip is important as well. Make sure to check the weather right before you leave as weather can change quickly.
Hiking alone is also never a good idea. Although alerting a friend or family member of your plans may appear to be a proactive way to hike on your own, in an instance of an emergency, you are left vulnerable. Whether it is at least one other person with you or even a large group, you will be safer if a dangerous situation occurs. When hiking, try your best to stick the path most travelled. Doing so will help you avoid injury as well as poisonous plants such as poison ivy or poison oak. If you are new to hiking, researching the warning signs of poison ivy or poison oak will help you avoid contact.
The type of clothing you wear during the hike is important too. Being in woodsy areas means you are at higher risk for ticks so wearing light colored clothing, long sleeved shirts and long pants (even during the summer months) can help prevent ticks from reaching your body and make them easier to see on your clothes. You should also dress in layers. Although a weather report is usually accurate, sometimes short rain showers or storms may happen that you may not have been aware of beforehand, if you are in layers you can prepare yourself for any type of weather as you can take off or keep on any amount of clothing you would like to in order to stay comfortable. Hats and sunglasses are always a good idea as well to protect you from the sun’s heat and UV rays. Also, staying hydrated during a hike is crucial and can help keep your body safe from heat exhaustion or dehydration.
Before you get started, begin with dynamic stretches focusing mainly on your core and lower body. Walking lunges, and high knees at a moderate pace are a great way of prepping your muscles for the challenges ahead. If you notice any discomfort during your hike, it is important to seek the help of a medical professional so that your injury does not worsen.
Hiking is a great way of staying active while getting some fresh air. It is important that you keep safety in mind so that you may continue to stay active and enjoy all nature has to offer in Canandaigua, NY and around the world for years to come.
