Maitland Technique

The Maitland Technique focuses on using passive and accessory mobilizations to treat ailments of the spine.  There are five grades of the Maitland Technique whose use depends on the severity of the spinal affliction a patient is dealing with, which include the following:

  • Grade 1 – Small movements of the spine are used within the spine’s resistance.
  • Grade 2 – Larger movements than grade one, however still within the spine’s resistance.
  • Grade 3 – Involves using large movements of the spine against its resistance.
  • Grade 4 – Involves using small movements of the spine against its resistance.
  • Grade 5 – Utilizes high-velocity movements against the resistance of the spine.

The mobilizations performed by our physical therapist will promote movement within the joints of the spine.  This movement will help reduce stiffness and inflammation, making a pain-free life possible once again.
