Services

Since 1987, we continue to offer rehabilitation and physical therapy services to all ages in the following areas (click the headings below for more information):

Orthopedics

Arthritis, aches, pains, stiffness, challenges getting out of bed, climbing stairs and more...

Physical therapy is strongly recommended for any muscle, bone, joint, ligament, fascial, or cartilage injury or after surgery.

From head to toe for all ages, hands on body work, known as manual therapies, such as pain reflex release techniques is used to quickly break the pain cycle allowing motion and tolerance to exercise for restoring flexibility, strength, agility, balance and endurance for ADL (activities of daily living). Modalities may be used to reduce pain, spasm, and inflammation, swelling and joint irritability. Modalities such as ultrasound, electrical stimulation, iontophoresis or biofeedback are commonly used. Instruction is provided in home self-care, postural correction and exercise.

Sports Injury Rehabilitation and Sports Specific Training

Weekend warriors, athletes of all ages, after surgery or for those who want to improve their sport performance. From head to toe, a customized plan of care is developed to manage the pain and restore mobility and function. Hands on body work, known as manual therapies, such as pain reflex release techniques is used to quickly break the pain cycle allowing motion and tolerance to exercise to restore flexibility, strength, agility and endurance for your desired sport or recreational activity. Modalities may be used to reduce pain, spasm, inflammation, swelling and joint irritability post injury. Modalities such as ultrasound, electrical stimulation, iontophoresis or biofeedback are commonly used. Instruction in home self-care and exercise accompanies drills to enhance sport performance.

Golf Performance Enhancement Program and Injury Rehabilitation

Guaranteed to lower strokes and hit a straighter ball while preventing common golf injuries.

A thorough evaluation of your injury, pain or difficulties with the sport, including a swing analysis is provided. Following your evaluation a customized program will be developed to lower your score and eliminate pain associated with play.

Spine Care - Neck and Back Care

Therapists with personal experience with back and neck pain are often the best at spine care. At Lake Country you have therapists with over four decades of experience. Pain control is the first priority. Hands on body work, known as manual therapies, such as pain reflex release techniques is used to quickly break the pain cycle allowing motion and tolerance to exercise to restore flexibility, strength, agility and endurance. Manual therapies may also include joint mobilization or manipulation, myofascial release techniques, strain counter strain techniques, McKenzie and more. Postural correction and body mechanics training to minimize the compressive forces on the spine are emphasized.

Modalities may be used to reduce pain, spasm, and inflammation, swelling and joint irritability. Modalities such as spinal decompression/ traction, ultrasound, electrical stimulation, iontophoresis or biofeedback are commonly used. Instruction is provided in home self-care pain management and exercise.

TMJ (Jaw Pain or Popping, Clenching and Difficulties Eating)

Temporomandibular Dysfunction (TMD) commonly known as TMJ; Temporomandibular Joint is a condition in which there is jaw, head, neck and/or upper back pain and/or tightness. Symptoms include clicking, locking, or popping when you open or close your mouth or chew, limited ability to open your mouth. Night grinding known as bruxism is a contributing factor to TMD. It is not uncommon to develop TMD after dental work. Evaluation of the jaw, head, neck and upper back will identify range of motion limitations, trigger regions of pain, muscle weakness and more. Treatment will range depending on the evaluation findings. Typically a plan of care will include pain reflex release techniques (PRRT), a manual hands on technique to break the pain cycle, joint mobilization or manipulation, soft tissue release techniques, stretching, strengthening, postural correction and instruction in home self-care.

Posture Correction

At any age, job related or simply due to computer and hand held games, phones and other technology, the posture of the human body is significantly challenged. The muscles on the back side of the body are overstretched and weakened while the front body is tight and restricted from the forward bent, slouched posture. Instruction is offered on posturing and positioning to minimize the compressive forces of the spine. An exercise program is developed to stretch what is tight and strengthen what is weak.

Vertigo/Vestibular/Balance Training

Vertigo is not dizziness, lightheadedness and giddiness. It is the sensation of moving around in space (subjective vertigo), a turning around or of having objects move about the person (objective vertigo). Vertigo is the result of a disturbance of equilibratory apparatus, our vestibular system.

Physical therapy is beneficial in restoring equilibrium by challenging balance and head position.

BPPV, benign paroxysmal positional vertigo is the most common vestibular disorder. Benign indicates not recurrent or progressive. Simply, the crystals in the inner ear dislodge and a special technique is needed to put the crystals back where they belong. The physical therapist's evaluation will determine the techniques to use and a home self-care program.

Post-concussion vertigo is a sensation of movement after blunt trauma to the head.

Cervicogenic vertigo is a result of an upper cervical (neck) dysfunction causing a sensation of movement when you are at rest and when moving your head.

After spine, hip, knee or ankle surgery, balance training is a must. In addition, as we age, balance is challenged and fear of falling heightens. A fall risk assessment and balance testing is provided. A customized program is developed to enhance loss of balance recovery and restore functional balance for activities of daily living.

Post Surgical

After any type of surgery the body must rest and recuperate. During this time the muscles atrophy with rest. Scar tissue develops during the healing process. In some people too much develops and restricts mobility of the muscles and joints causing pain. Movement is compromised and painful. After a radical neck procedure, cesarean section, abdominal surgery, breast surgery, hysterectomy or hernia repair there are questions about when movement and what type of movement is recommended. Physical therapy treatment provides guidance in the return to activity and eliminates question of safety or re-injury. Manual therapies, postural education and therapeutic exercise are instructed to facilitate adequate healing.

Cancer Related Fatigue

Surgical procedures, radiation and chemotherapy all cause significant fatigue. Physical therapists are educated on proper progression to resume physical activity. Instructions on energy management.

Continence Care for Men and Women of All Ages

Incontinence can happen to athletes, seniors, middle age, children, after surgery or trauma. Incontinence is the loss of bladder or bowel control resulting in involuntary leakage of urine or stool. Pelvic floor weakness resulting in a reduction of muscular support for the bladder, uterus or rectum may be the cause. The muscles through disuse are unable to tighten and keep the openings closed. Incontinence of urine may be termed stress (leakage with physical activity, coughing, sneezing or laughing), urgency (involuntary bladder emptying whenever the sensation of urge is felt) or frequency. Men are likely to leak urine after prostate surgery. Involuntary leakage of feces and gas can be the result of chronic constipation or trauma. Behavioral assessment of foods, beverage, medications and toilet habits can identify contributing factors. Treatment includes retraining bowel and bladder habits, abdominal and pelvic floor muscle rehabilitation with or without electrical stimulation or biofeedback.

Pelvic Floor Tension/Pain/Scar Tissue/Trauma

Pelvic floor tension or pain in the sling of muscles which support the bladder, uterus and rectum can be caused by muscle, nerve, joint problems, scar tissue from surgery, childbirth, and endometriosis or after radiation. Pelvic pain can also be caused by hemorrhoids, anal fissures, organ prolapse or constipation. The individual may have painful intercourse, difficulty sitting, and pain in the buttocks, hips, lower abdomen or low back. Imbalances in the muscles surrounding the pelvis can cause or contribute to symptoms of Vulvar Vestibulitis, Vulvodynia, Interstitial Cystitis, or Vaginismus. Rehabilitation includes pelvic floor relaxation training, manual therapies, postural and therapeutic exercise, electrical stimulation and biofeedback.

Osetopenia/Osteoporosis

Osteopenia is the precursor to osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a condition in which bones become thin and brittle, and break more easily. Screening is available to identify peak bone mass. Prevention education and treatment programs include fall prevention, balance activity, instruction in proper body mechanics and exercise, fitting of braces or orthotics and pain management.

Physically Active Women

Female athletes, whether weekend warriors, seasonal or competitive require special needs at various stages in life. Physical therapists provide instruction in self-care of aches and pains, proper execution of the desired exercise or sport and treatment to eliminate signs and symptoms limiting or preventing performance.

Dymenorrhea

Painful menstruation, often associated with bloating or pain during intercourse, may be relieved with certain postural and therapeutic exercises and positioning. TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation), Interferential electrical stimulation or biofeedback treatment may be used to reduce pain.

Pregnancy Related Pain (Orthopedic and High Risk)

Pregnant women may suffer from pain or aching in the back or shoulder blades, rib cage, groin area or wrists due to changes in posture, weight, or hormonal factors. Not only are these women more susceptible to injury during pregnancy, but related orthopedic problems may persist or begin after delivery. Maternity supports, manual therapy, strengthening or activities of daily living retraining techniques are typical treatments. Post-delivery rehabilitation including strengthening and endurance training of the abdominal wall and pelvic floor is crucial whether a vaginal delivery or Cesarean section.

For women in a high risk pregnancy, bed rest is often necessary. The physical therapist will design an individual program of exercises and positioning as well as incorporating relaxation training into the overall program.

Perimenopausal

Menopause (less frequent menstruation and abnormal cycles) may occur any time within a 20 year span. Hormonal, cardiovascular, pulmonary, gastrointestinal, renal and musculoskeletal system changes occur during this range of time. These changes can affect energy levels which require adjustments in one's own personal exercise intensity.

Lymphedema

Lymphedema is a persistent swelling of the arm or leg. It may occur after mastectomy, when lymph nodes are damaged or removed, or following infection or scar formation which blocks the lymphatic fluid flow. Lymphedema may occur weeks, months or years after the initial injury, trauma or surgery. Postural and therapeutic exercise, massage, custom-made compression bandaging and compression garments are among the treatment choices.

Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition with persistent and widespread musculoskeletal pain along with specific tender points. A variety of other symptoms, varying from person to person, include generalized stiffness, fatigue, anxiety and thought processing problems. Treatment to reduce pain and promote function emphasizes pace and tolerance to movement. Instruction is provided on ways to move to minimize the stress placed on aching body parts throughout daily activities. Pain management manual therapies, PRRT pain reflex release techniques, instruction in self-care pain management principles, exercise and postural correction, gentle yoga positions all assist toward enhanced function. Heat modalities and biofeedback to promote relaxation may also be beneficial.

Work Related and Motor Vehicle Injury

Injuries caused by job requirements or motor vehicle accidents require knowledge about trauma and its physical and emotional effects on the body. Multiple body parts are often involved requiring the physical therapist to evaluate several areas of the body and developing a customized program to address each and every issue without exacerbating pain. For example, if there is knee and back pain, then a program will be designed to improve the knee without making the back pain worse and vice versa.

Trauma can be sudden such as lifting, slipping or falling. Trauma can be cumulative as in repetitive bending or cutting.

From head to toe, hands on body work, known as manual therapies, such as pain reflex release techniques is used to quickly break the pain cycle allowing motion and tolerance to exercise for restoring flexibility, strength, agility, balance and endurance for ADL (activities of daily living) and job performance. Modalities may be used to reduce pain, spasm, and inflammation, swelling and joint irritability. Modalities such as ultrasound, electrical stimulation, iontophoresis, spinal decompression/traction or biofeedback are commonly used. Instruction is provided in home self-care, postural correction and exercise. Ergonomic training is also incorporated in the plan of care. This is learning how to work safely to avoid pain and repetitive trauma such as carpel tunnel syndrome.
