Physical Therapy and Functional Mobility

Functional Mobility

Functional mobility is the manner in which people are able to move around in the environment while comfortably participating in daily hobbies. These activities include walking, eating, bathing, and dressing amongst other everyday movements. If you are struggling with any of these daily movements due to injury, illness, or a period of immobilization, contact Lake Country Physical Therapy in Canandaigua, New York. At our practice, we have trained specialists that can help improve your overall mobility.

The three main areas that our physical therapists may evaluate to determine the level of your functional mobility, before assisting you, are bed mobility, transfers, and ambulation.

  1. Bed Mobility describes how capable you are to move around freely while in sleeping. This includes movements such as adjusting from lying to sitting and sitting to lying, rolling, and scooting.
  2. Transfers refer to the act of walking around on various types of surfaces. For example, when we move from standing to the seat of a vehicle or from one chair to a different seated position.
  3. Ambulation is one’s ability to walk. Furthermore, when the body is weakened, one may require assistance from an assistive device, such as a cane or walker, or help from another person.

When beginning treatment with our specialists at Lake Country Physical Therapy in Canandaigua, we will evaluate your functional mobility to determine the severity of the pain you are encountering. Correspondingly, our physical therapists may also provide you with specific exercises to help improve your mobility at home and while in treatment. These exercises may include:
